- BA with 2H:2 in History OR
- BA in Local Studies, 2H:2 OR
- Degree in any subject for more than three years with proven record in Local History
Programme
- Taught modules (50% marks)
- Minor thesis (50% marks)+
Course Content, 2011-12
There are two compulsory modules in semester one, as follows:
HY601 Approaches to Local History (12.5 cr)
HY602 Interpreting local evidence (12.5 cr)
In semester two, students take the following module:
HY643 Evolution of Irish landed estates and designed landscapes (10 cr)
together with one of the following:
HY604 Evolution of the Irish urban landscape (10 cr)
HY647 Heritage, cultural tourism and the historic house (10 cr)
There are two compulsory thesis-related modules:
HY698 Thesis preparation (20 cr)
HY699 Thesis completion (25 cr)
Full-time students (intending to complete the programme in three semesters) will need to attend all sessions on both evenings.
Part-time students are required to complete the programme over a maximum of six semesters. Please note that HY698 is a prerequisite for HY699.
Assessment
HY601: Essay, 8,000 words
HY602: Essay 5,500 words, 70%; in-class test in Palaeography, 15%; short essay on
statistical material, 1,500 words, 15%
HY643: Case study
HY604 Case study, 6,500 words
HY647 Research project, 80%; Class presentation, 20%
HY698 and HY699 are assessed jointly on the basis of a minor thesis (c. 15,000 to 20,000 words) on an approved topic using primary sources and presented in accordance with the conventions of the discipline. Submission by 15 December. Modules contribute to the final mark in proprtion to their credit weighting.
