General Information
This programme aims to educate students to the principles, attitudes and skills that underpin the professional management of historical archives. It is particularly geared to the ‘sole operator’ who is entrusted with the care of archives in voluntary societies, religious institutions, historic houses and other smallscale but important settings. The aim is to educate archivists who will be able to draw up and implement, from first principles, archive management solutions appropriate to such collections.
In addition, the programme aims to give students an understanding of the historical processes that have generated records, the key repositories in which they are held, and the history of recordkeeping in Ireland.
Entry Requirements
At least second class honours degree or equivalent in History. Holders of a degree of at least three years’ standing in any discipline can be admitted if they have a proven record of interest and involvement in the field of historical archives. Basic computer competence is also required.
Candidates may be called for interview, and/or for an assessment of their computer skills, as part of the selection process.
Candidates are expected to be involved firsthand in archival work on a part-time or full-time basis for the duration of the programme; admission to the programme is dependent upon arrangements for suitable work experience being in place.
